55 SEO Interview Questions

Interviewing and hiring SEOs has been on my mind recently as my team has been actively looking to expand. Such thoughts are part of what prompted me to update and re-publish an old post of mine on why a career in SEO may be a bad move. I'm not sure that all of the people that read my article also read my counter argument on why a career in SEO can also be a good move, but it certainly inspired some discussion, mostly disagreement. If you're inclined to pursue an SEO career either in-house or at an agency, one of the most important obstacles you'll need to get through is the barrage of interview questions that will be thrown at you.

About a third of these 55 interview questions are ones I thought of. The rest I picked from various postings around the web from people I think are worthy of attention. Credits are at the bottom.

Technical / Tactics

Every SEO prefers certain tactics over others, but familiarity with many could indicate a deeper understanding of the industry. And while every SEO doesn't need to have a web developer background, having such skills can help set someone apart from the crowd.

  1. Give me a description of your general SEO experience.
  2. Can you write HTML code by hand?
  3. Could you briefly explain the PageRank algorithm?
  4. How you created any SEO tools either from scratch or pieced together from others?
  5. What do you think of PageRank?
  6. What do you think of using XML sitemaps?
  7. What are your thoughts on the direction of Web 2.0 technologies with regards to SEO?
  8. What SEO tools do you regularly use?
  9. Under what circumstances would you look to exclude pages from search engines using robots.txt vs meta robots tag?
  10. What areas do you think are currently the most important in organically ranking a site?
  11. Do you have experience in copywriting and can you provide some writing samples?
  12. Have you ever had something you've written reach the front-page of Digg? Sphinn? Or be Stumbled?
  13. Explain to me what META tags matter in today's world.
  14. Explain various steps that you would take to optimize a website?
  15. If the company whose site you've been working for has decided to move all of its content to a new domain, what steps would you take?
  16. Rate from 1 to 10, tell me the most important "on page" elements
  17. Review the code of past clients/company websites where SEO was performed.
  18. What do you think about link buying?
  19. What is Latent Semantic Analysis (LSI Indexing)?
  20. What is Phrase Based Indexing and Retrieval and what roles does it play?
  21. What is the difference between SEO and SEM?
  22. What kind of strategies do you normally implement for back links?
  23. What role does social media play in an SEO strategy?
  24. What things wouldn't you to do increase rankings because the risk of penalty is too high?
  25. What's the difference between PageRank and Toolbar PageRank?
  26. Why might you want to use nofollow on an internal link?

Analysis

A big part of SEO involves assessing the effectiveness of a campaign both relative to past performance as well as to competing sites.

  1. Are you familiar with web analytics and what packages are your familiar with?
  2. From an analytics perspective, what is different between a user from organic search results vs. a type-in user?
  3. How do you distinguish the results of your search optimization work from a seasonal change in traffic patterns?
  4. How do you evaluate whether an SEO campaign is working?
  5. What does competitive analysis mean to you and what techniques do you use?
  6. If you've done 6 months of SEO for a site and yet there haven't been any improvements, how would you go about diagnosing the problem?
  7. How many target keywords should a site have?
  8. How do *you* help a customer decide how to their budget between organic SEO and pay-per-click SEM?
  9. You hear a rumor that Google is weighting the HTML LAYER tag very heavily in ranking the relevance of its results - how does this affect your work?
  10. Why does Google rank Wikipedia for so many topics?

Industry Involvement

Is SEO just a job to pay the bills? Nothing wrong with that, but some senior positions can benefit from more enthusiasm and interest that can be measured by work done outside of the office.

  1. If salary and location were not an issue, who would you work for?
  2. In Google Lore - what are 'Hilltop', 'Florida' and 'Big Daddy'?
  3. Have you attended any search related conferences?
  4. Google search on this candidates name, (if you cannot find them, that's a red flag).
  5. Do you currently do SEO on your own sites? Do you operate any blogs? Do you currently do any freelance work and do you plan on continuing it?
  6. Of the well-known SEOs, who are you not likely to pay attention to?
  7. What are some challenges facing the SEO industry?
  8. What industry sites, blogs, and forums do you regularly read?
  9. Who are the two key people - who started Google?
  10. Who is Matt Cutts?
  11. If you were bidding on a contract, what competitor would you most worry about?

Open-Ended

These questions are more about how an answer is given rather than the actual answer. They often scare interviewees, but with no wrong answer they're actually a good opportunity to shine.

  1. Tell me your biggest failure in an SEO project
  2. What areas of SEO do you most enjoy?
  3. In what areas of SEO are you strongest?
  4. In what areas of SEO are you weakest?
  5. How do you handle a client who does not implement your SEO recommendations?
  6. Can you get "xyz"? company listed for the keyword "Google"? in the first page?
  7. What do you think is different about working for an SEO agency vs. doing SEO in-house?
  8. Why are you moving from your current position and/or leaving any current projects?

HOW TO INCREASE YOUR WEBSITE TRAFFIC

The following topics will be covered:

  • Search engine optimization
  • Social networks submissions
  • Paid advertisement methods
  • Other methods

Search Engine Optimization

The process of a real Search Engine Optimization can be really long and complicated one. Still, we will mention some essential tips that should help you to attract more traffic to your website from organic search queries.

First, you should make sure that your website is well indexed by the search engines. You can “help” them by creating a SiteMap of your website and submit your website via different search engines. To create a sitemap you can use some free services available on the Internet. For example, the following website provides a free SiteMap generator which will include up to 500 pages of your website — http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/

As soon as you have your SiteMap generated, you should place it under the root of your domain name in order to be accessible via http://your-domain.tld/sitemap.xml. It is a good idea to submit your website to different search engines. You can use the following links to submit your website:

You may also register your website to the Google WebMaster tools (http://google.com/webmastertools) where you will be able to submit your SiteMap as well.

Additionally, you can order a SiteMap generation and submission as an extra professional service via your TMDHosting Customer area -> extra professional services.

Every website, which is running for a good search engine ranking should have a good sitemap, in addition to its search engine optimization. By purchasing this service, you ensure that all crawling search engines (including Google, Yahoo, etc.) will be informed of your website’s content in terms of links and other hierarchy. You also will be allowed to include additional information about each URL, such as when it was last updated, how often it changes, and how important it is in relation to other URLs in the site. This allows search engines to crawl the site much more intelligently, which automatically improves your search engine rankings. The better rankings, the bigger revenue and more visitors you get to your website.

Another thing that you should consider is to create SEO-friendly content for your website. For example, you should do your best to title your articles as close as possible to the natural (organic) terms that a person would use if it is looking for your content. Additionally, you should make sure that your pages have title tag, meta description tags and meta keywords tags which will definitely increase your content visibility in the search engines.

For more detailed and additional information you may refer to the Google Webmasters section where different aspects of website optimization are explained.

You can also take advantage of our professional SEO optimization services which includes:

  • Meta tags optimization
  • Meta description optimization
  • Manual Submission to the biggest Search Engines(Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc)
  • Manual Social Networks Submission
  • 500 USA Targeted Visits
  • Traffic Boost Program
  • Sitemap attachment
  • Googlebot one time invitation

With this exclusive service, you will have the opportunity to allow our search engine optimization specialists to analyze your website’s content and advise the most appropriate solution for boosting your website’s search engines ranking. The better ranking, the more visitors you will be getting to your website. This service can be ordered via your customer area with TMDHosting -> extra professional services.

Social networks submissions

Different social networks can be a great source of referral traffic to your website. You can both provide a way for your visitors to submit your articles and products to different social networks and submit your content on your own.

One of the most popular way to provide your visitors with the option to submit your website through different social networks is the Bookmark This button. It provides a huge list of different websites where your website can be submitted. You can obtain your AddThis/BookMark button from the following website: http://www.addtoany.com/

On the other hand, you can submit your articles and products to networks such as:

http://www.digg.com

http://www.stumbleupon.com

and many others which are available in the Bookmark This tool. Furthermore, you can create pages of your website or submit it in different social networks. Create social profile pages at squidoo, hubpages, bumpzee, twitter, facebook, etc. on which you put the same content or links to your website. Creating such profiles takes a couple of minutes and so is updating them with links to your website. You may refer to the following list for example:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_social_networking_websites

Paid advertisement methods

Paid advertisement is another method to increase your website traffic. One of the most popular ways to advertise your website is the Google pay-per-click program. You can read more about the Google AdWords advertisement programs on their official website.

Additionally, you can use banner advertisement method. You can find different websites which has relevant content to your topics and contact the webmaster for any opportunities to place a banner on their website. Most websites usually have an advertisement section where you can check the fees and the expected traffic referral rate based on the website statistics.

Other methods

Set up a blog and post articles about your website. With each post you make give a link to your site which you can then submit to social bookmarking sites. Search engines love blogs as they have real content and are very often updated. Moreover, whenever you write for your blog you need to use all the strong keywords you are aware of connected with your website and product/ service. Be very careful with the articles you write as those can be used to demonstrate your knowledge and improve credibility in your area of business. On the other hand, articles can be submitted to optimized article directories. Someone visiting those directories and reading your articles will be impressed by your knowledge and expertise and will click through to your website via a link at the bottom of the article. So, make a blog for your website and give interesting articles to your visitors to read – you can be sure they will be coming back for more raising your website’s traffic.

Comment on other people blogs posting meaningful comments. Be sure you post in blogs which allow links back to your website. Do not forget to read the post correctly before making original comments. Otherwise you could be accused of spamming.

Join forums and discussion sites relevant to your theme. Read the topics that you feel closest to and try to participate in the discussion and don’t do it in a commercial way. At the end of each post place a signature link that will help the concerned people find your site.

Create videos about your company/product and share them on YouTube and other video sharing websites is also a great way to increase your site traffic. As YouTube is a great advertising venue, such videos will help you promote your business and services easily. Once you have your videos and upload them, do not forget to give them correct titles and description. A good title is catchy and interesting or includes keywords that will help people remember it or find it via the search engines. You can also promote your videos on social networks and sites like Stumble upon, Digg and Hubpages which are the best ones to use in this case. Include a link to your site in the description or any other additional information that could catch the attention of ones watching the videos and helps them remember them easily

We hope that the provided information will help you successfully promote your site for free over the cyberspace. Give it a try – your efforts and promotions are most likely to pay off soon.

The new mission of the Marians of the Immaculate Conception in the Philippines has gotten off to a big start — big and tall — climaxed by the "Triple Grand Celebration" at Divine Mercy Hills in the city El Salvador, Mindanao.

From Sept. 5-7, several hundred people attended the triduum. The celebration culminated on Sept. 8, when more than 20,000 pilgrims journeyed to Divine Mercy Hills before dawn for (1) the dedication and blessing of a 50-foot Divine Mercy statue, (2) the formal turnover of the statue to the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro, and (3) to celebrate the Blessed Mother's birthday.

How to get 2000+ Quality Link Per Day

Here is how to get 2000+ back link per day…

1. Create 2 new Article from 250 – 350 word is fine or if you have collection of PLR articles in your hard drive then use them here…

2. Search for 15 free blog hosting sites, such wordpress.com, blogger, livejournal, hubpages, yahoo360, squidoo, and other free blog hosting sites.

3. Create account blog to each of the 15 free blog hosting sites, and post 2 your two article including 3 links to your site/sites.

4. After Creating all your 15 blogs, get all the RSS Feeds of those 15 new blogs you created.

5. Submit all those rss feeds to the top 25 rss feed directories, like badrss.com , millionrss, 1000sites.net, feedagg, feedage, and other known rss feed directories.

When this task completed you surely have 2000+ back link to you site/s.

How does that happened?

15 Blogs X 2 Post X 3 links each = 90 Links
15 Blogs X 2 Post X 3 Links each X 25 RSS Feed directory = 2,250

Small Is Beautiful SEO “Don’ts”: 20 Fatal Mistakes You Must Avoid To Succeed

Small Business SEO Checklist: The Don’ts

1. Don’t reply to the SEO spam you get via e-mail. You don’t need to submit to 1,000 search engines or 500 directories. You can’t buy 2,000 quality links for $50. And no reputable SEO can guarantee a number one ranking on any search engine for keywords that matter. The kind of SEO company you want to hire doesn’t send out spam.

2. Don’t wait too long to implement SEO. Whether you’re launching a new Web site or upgrading your current site, SEO considerations should be part of the discussion from day one.

3. Don’t take your decision to hire an SEO company too lightly. Hiring an SEO company is not like choosing a company to service your copy machine. Online marketing can make or break your company, so choosing a vendor should involve a lot of research and questions with the companies you’re considering.

4. Don’t hire an SEO company and then divorce yourself from the process. It’s your job to know and understand as much as possible about the strategies and tactics your SEO company will be using. If your SEO company uses high-risk tactics and your site gets caught, you’ll be the one paying the price.

5. Don’t spread your content over several domains. There are times when sub-domains or an additional domain might make sense, but those occasions should be dominated by user and content considerations, not an attempt to get multiple domains/sites listed in the SERPs. Know the pros and cons of using sub-domains and additional domains.

6. Don’t waste your time submitting your URL to search engines. The crawler-based search engines will find your site more quickly as soon as you get a link from another web site already being crawled. Search engine submission died a few years ago.

7. Don’t make your web site uncrawlable. This can result from an incorrect robots.txt file, having session IDs or too many variables in your URLs, using a convoluted navigation menu that spiders can’t (or won’t) follow, or developing an all-Flash, all-graphic, or all-AJAX site.

8. Don’t target overly general keywords. A real estate agency in Wichita has no shot at ranking for the phrase “real estate;” a lawyer in Fresno has no shot at ranking for the word “lawyer.” Optimize for relevant, specific keywords that will bring targeted traffic.

9. Don’t stuff keywords in your meta tags, image alt tags, etc. That is so 1996-97. Today, it’s called spam.

10. Don’t stuff keywords in your page footer with lightly-colored or hidden text. That is so 1998-99. Today, it’s also called spam.

11. Don’t have the same title element on every page. Variety is the spice of life and, combined with relevance, is a pre-requisite to avoiding duplicate content issues and Google’s supplemental index.

12. Don’t allow both www.yourdomain.com and domain.com to resolve to your home page. Those are two separate addresses to a search engine, and that means you have the same content at two addresses. On a related note, don’t link to your home page with a URL like www.yourdomain.com/index.html—that’s also a separate address from www.yourdomain.com and will also look like duplicate content.

13. Don’t ignore usability. Things like proper site structure, logical navigation, descriptive link text, etc., are good for both users and search engine spiders.

14. Don’t give up on creating great content because you think your customers don’t need or want it, or because your product or service doesn’t lend itself to great content. No matter what business you’re in, you can add great (linkable) content to your web site. A glossary is an easy way to create a page of great, keyword-rich content. Also consider a frequently asked questions page, a testimonials page, how to articles, product support manuals and so on.

15. Don’t develop an unbalanced link profile. Too many small business owners, knowing links are important, immediately begin trading links with any and every site they can find. Not a good idea. Reciprocal links aren’t bad by default, but if most of your inbound links are the result of link trades, they won’t help much. Reciprocal links should only be made with quality, relevant web sites, and should only represent a fraction of your overall link profile.

16. Don’t request the same exact anchor text on all links to your site. This is an obvious sign of unnatural link building. Your link building should look natural, and varied anchor text will help.

17. Don’t plaster your link all over blog comments, guestbooks, etc. That’s called spamming, not SEO.

18. Don’t fret over keyword density. Yes, your target keyword and closely-related terms should appear in the page title, description meta tag, and page copy. No, a calculator is not an SEO tool.

19. Don’t obsess over Google PageRank. What you see in the toolbar is several months old, and doesn’t affect rankings like it used to. PageRank is now more about crawl frequency and depth, and whether a page is stored in the main index or supplemental index.

20. Don’t check your rankings every day. They’re going to change whether you look or not. Better to spend time improving your web site rather than watching it flutter up and down the SERPs.
